Carby Bolger assumes, as he has all his life, that he’ll inherit the family farm in County Kilkenny, Ireland. After all, he’s the eldest child and only son, making him heir by ancient custom. And when his ailing father finally dies, Carby—a prickly loner of a man—plans to finally capitalize on the farm’s secret.

The heir apparent’s plans come crashing down when his sister Molly returns from London to care for their ill parents. When she becomes pregnant, with no husband in sight, her condition—and her lack of any effort to hide it—shocks and outrages the staunchly Catholic community. But when her son is born, he immediately steals the heart of his dying grandfather, a beloved member of the close-knit community. More than that, to Carby’s horror, the “little bastard” inherits everything.

What follows is a rancorous lawsuit on which everyone in the county seems to have an opinion—especially the regulars at Finnegan’s Pub. Faced with an abrasive, disliked judge, Carby finds himself a local hero for the first time in his life. How long he can retain his newfound local favor depends on his own patience and his sister, who plans to sell the farm (and, unwittingly, its secret) to an American, driving Carby to desperate and—as it turns out—fateful measures.

A classical piece of Irish storytelling, Carby’s Fate combines family drama and duplicity with violence, betrayal, and redemptive hope.

Carby Fate edition by Thomas Rice Literature Fiction eBooks

CARBY'S FATE is a beautifully written, tension packed drama, in which characters who could be right off the boat from Ireland, seem to invade the reader's living room. Carby is a grouchy, unlikeable character, fighting a lost cause. But we come to accept him, at first grudgingly, but as we get swept up in the dynamics of the town, we come to accept him. The drama is laced with great dialogue, lovely lyric language, and descriptions of the Irish countryside that make you thirst to be there. Thomas Rice is a master story teller at work. He shows a deep understanding and love for his native land, and an appreciation for its history, and yet he can laugh at the foibles of character.

Carby Fate edition by Thomas Rice Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

In the rural Irish village of Rathdangan in County Kilkenny, the story of Carby’s fate consumes residents and outsiders as it twists and turns towards its startling conclusion. Carby Bolger, a local farmer and sometime ne’er do well, assumes he will become master of the family farm when his father dies. Sure that the ages-old custom of primogeniture will favor him, he’s outraged when the local judge takes “a wrecking ball to the natural order” by certifying Carby’s father’s will leaving the farm to his sister’s illegitimate son. His outrage soon has the town’s “squinting window” crowd up at arms as residents choose up sides based on ancient and hide-bound mindsets that ignore recent changes to law and custom. Underneath this drama (and unknown to others), Carby has a more hopeful fate in mind that belies his apparent character.

Thomas Rice, a child himself of rural Ireland, rounds up a thoroughly Irish cast of characters. In addition to the troubled Carby, there’s his sister Molly, a successful nurse and out-of-wedlock mother of Noel, who ignites the story when she returns to Rathdangan to care for their ailing parents. We meet the loud-mouthed Paddy Crotty holding forth at P. J. Finnegan’s, the local pub, whose bravado is unmatched by his courage to act. The bartender, Myles Dunne, whose life will be transformed by these events, knows the local history and lends a compassionate ear to the unfortunate Carby. Judge Brian Flanagan kick-starts the controversy when he endorses the will but keeps a tight rein on proceedings while recognizing Carby’s struggle to cope. And then there is the bully, Kevin Cassidy, a former New York City cop of Irish ancestry, whose heavy handed attempt to buy the farm eventually brings about his own demise while sealing Carby’s fate.

Rice, a consummate storyteller, brings you into this colorful world with his vivid descriptions of the events and the characters that inhabit this place.
Carby's Fate in its simplest form appears to describe a town battling over ownership of land but in reality it has more to do with status and entitlement
Thomas Rice, in his style as the ultimate story teller, captures your attention by his clear depiction of the unique personalities and emotions of the central characters.
His obvious understanding and love for the place of his birth creates an understanding and
empathy that helps clarify the sometimes irrational actions of the protagonists
This book should be required reading for anyone planning to visit Ireland with the desire of not only gaining a full appreciation of the beauty of the land but more importantly the history and culture that motivates its inhabitants
Another outstanding piece of writing by the author
Author Thomas Rice has just hit another home run with his short novella Carby's Fate. I loved his first book, Far From the Land (highly recommend it!) and in a different way love this story of a disputed estate in a small Irish town. Told through the eyes and voice of the all-knowing bartender, this little drama is packed full of interesting characters and wonderful dialogue. Carby, the central character is initially isolated and anti-social. When the inheritance he expected is challenged by unusual circumstances, he transforms into a rallying point for the local patrons of the pub. At issue is the tradition of primogeniture and how that is now being questioned by modernity.

Thomas Rice employs his talents as a great storyteller to reveal the "soul" of the individuals and the collective. The story he tells is very Irish and local in nature, but like his other novel, evokes the universal condition we all find ourselves in. Of course there is a romantic angle in the story (lovely Molly) which keeps it light at times and fun to read.

The ending is well-written and surprising. This story is just a little more than 100 pages. I enjoyed being able to read it in just a few sittings. Perfect for vacation reading, plane rides or the beach! I would write more but I don't want to spoil your enjoyment by revealing too much.
